Reliance Considers Major Investment in Low Earth Orbit Satellite Sector

Summary:
Reliance Industries is reportedly exploring a multi-billion-dollar expansion into the satellite communications sector through Jio Platforms, potentially competing with global players such as Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. The company has reportedly formed six specialised teams to oversee areas including satellite systems, launches, payloads, and user terminals, in line with India’s push to strengthen domestic capabilities in low earth orbit satellite communications. Reliance has also reportedly initiated discussions with the Department of Telecommunications regarding orbital slot filings with the International Telecommunication Union, which manages global satellite spectrum and orbital allocations.

Reliance Industries is reportedly evaluating a significant expansion into the satellite communications industry, with investments that could amount to several billion dollars. If pursued, the initiative would position the company against international satellite broadband providers including Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

The planned venture is expected to be housed under Jio Platforms. Reports indicate that six dedicated teams have been formed to handle various components of the programme, including satellite development, launch operations, payload systems, and customer terminals. The effort aligns with the Indian government’s push to strengthen indigenous satellite communication capabilities, particularly in low earth orbit (LEO) networks, amid concerns over reliance on overseas providers for strategic infrastructure.

In addition, Reliance has reportedly begun engaging with the Department of Telecommunications regarding orbital slot applications with the International Telecommunication Union, the global body responsible for coordinating satellite spectrum and orbital allocations.
