Although Wi-Fi 8 devices are still some time away from widespread adoption, the launch highlights the industry’s shift toward more stable, efficient, and intelligent home networking solutions. 

The next phase of wireless networking is beginning to emerge, and ASUS is positioning itself at the forefront of the transition. The company has introduced the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro, which it claims is the world’s first gaming router built for Wi-Fi 8. The announcement arrives even though the Wi-Fi 8 specification, formally known as IEEE 802.11bn, has yet to be officially finalized.

The launch provides an early indication of how home networking technology may evolve in the coming years. Unlike previous Wi-Fi generations that emphasized peak speed improvements, Wi-Fi 8 is expected to focus on enhancing connection stability, reducing latency, extending coverage, and delivering more reliable real-world performance.

How Wi-Fi 8 Aims to Improve Connectivity

As the successor to Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 8 is being developed with an emphasis on connection quality rather than simply increasing theoretical speed limits.

According to ASUS, the GT-BN98 Pro is capable of delivering up to double the throughput and twice the IoT coverage compared with earlier-generation technologies. The company notes that these benefits are particularly evident in medium- and long-range environments where wireless signals typically weaken, including upper floors, garages, gardens, and rooms located farther from the router.

A major objective of Wi-Fi 8 is also to improve communication efficiency between routers and connected devices. As households continue to add smart televisions, security cameras, speakers, sensors, and other connected products, maintaining reliable connectivity across numerous devices has become increasingly critical.

Rather than focusing solely on headline speed figures, the new generation of wireless networking is expected to prioritize a more dependable and consistent user experience throughout the home.

Gaming-Focused Features

True to the Republic of Gamers branding, gaming remains a central aspect of the router’s design. ASUS has integrated AI Game Boost, a three-stage traffic acceleration system intended to prioritize gaming data from the user’s device through to the game server. The company claims the feature can lower latency by as much as 34 percent, helping improve responsiveness and overall gameplay smoothness.

The router is also equipped with high-end networking hardware, including dual 10GbE ports with link aggregation support, four 2.5GbE ports, and an additional 1GbE port. A dedicated 10G gaming port automatically prioritizes gaming traffic without requiring manual configuration.

For users with multi-gigabit fibre broadband services, ASUS positions the GT-BN98 Pro as one of its most powerful consumer networking products to date.

Built for Smart Home Environments

Beyond gaming, ASUS is targeting households with an increasing number of connected devices. From smart speakers and surveillance cameras to home automation systems and connected appliances, modern homes place growing demands on network infrastructure.

To support these environments, the router includes guest networking options, VLAN management, VPN functionality, advanced AiProtection security features, and real-time Wi-Fi interference monitoring. These tools are designed to help users manage complex home networks while maintaining performance and security.

ASUS also notes that Wi-Fi 8 improvements could provide more reliable connectivity for low-power IoT devices, an increasingly important requirement as smart home adoption continues to grow.

Enhanced Cooling and Performance

The company has also paid particular attention to thermal management. According to ASUS, the router features a thicker aluminium top plate, an upgraded nanocarbon coating, and a redesigned airflow system that improves heat dissipation by up to 35 percent compared with the earlier ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000.

While cooling may appear secondary, it becomes increasingly important as modern routers handle larger data volumes, advanced security processing, and AI-driven optimization tasks. Improved thermal performance can help sustain consistent operation during prolonged periods of heavy use.

Although ASUS has yet to reveal pricing details or complete wireless specifications, the launch highlights how networking manufacturers are already preparing for the arrival of Wi-Fi 8 before the standard is formally adopted.

Looking Ahead

For the majority of users, Wi-Fi 7 hardware is likely to remain more than adequate in the near term. Wi-Fi 8-compatible smartphones, laptops, and other devices are still some way from reaching widespread adoption.

Nevertheless, the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro serves as an early preview of the future direction of home networking. Upcoming wireless technologies are expected to place equal importance on reliability, coverage, latency, and support for growing numbers of connected devices, alongside higher speeds.

As homes continue to rely on smartphones, smart TVs, gaming systems, security cameras, voice assistants, and connected appliances, maintaining stable connectivity across the entire household is becoming just as important as achieving faster internet speeds. Whether Wi-Fi 8 arrives next year or later, ASUS’ latest product demonstrates that the industry is already preparing for the next generation of wireless connectivity.
