Summary:
Vodafone Idea added around 5.06 million wireless subscribers in August 2026, marking a sharp increase after several months of relatively modest growth. The rise may be linked to network improvements, stronger marketing and wider 5G expansion, supported by funding for capital expenditure. However, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have alleged that Vi offered different incentives to customers porting their numbers, prompting calls for regulatory scrutiny. If such practices are found to have driven the subscriber gains, they could pose challenges for Vi in the longer term.
Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), India’s third-largest telecom operator, has been recording subscriber additions for several consecutive months. The company began reporting new user additions around February 2026, although the monthly gains remained relatively modest. However, August 2026 witnessed an unusual surge in the number of subscribers added by Vi in a single month. According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its monthly performance indicator report, Vi added around 5.06 million wireless subscribers to its overall customer base. This represents a significant development for the telecom operator and could have a positive effect on its quarterly performance, particularly if the new additions include 4G and 5G users across various regions.
The sharp increase in subscriber additions during August 2026 could be linked to improvements in network quality, more aggressive and effective marketing efforts, as well as the broader expansion of 5G services. Vi has also secured funding from investors to support its capital expenditure (capex) requirements. This additional funding has enabled the company to invest in its network and may have contributed to the notable rise in subscriber additions.
However, private telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have raised complaints with the regulatory authority regarding alleged practices by Vodafone Idea. The two leading operators have alleged that Vi is providing different offers to customers who are porting their numbers to its network. Under existing rules, telecom operators are not permitted to provide differential offers to customers seeking to port their numbers. Jio and Airtel have therefore urged the regulator to investigate Vi’s alleged practices. If such offers are found to be responsible for the company’s recent subscriber gains, it could create challenges for Vi over the longer term.
