Summary:
Jio Platforms plans to expand its home broadband customer base from around 30 million to 100 million using proprietary wireless technology, targeting 19,000 PIN codes, particularly beyond tier I and tier II cities. Its technology already serves 6.5 million customers and contributes 40% of new additions, with future versions expected to deliver speeds of up to 5 Gbps for downloads. Jio also aims to strengthen enterprise digital services, build on its technology stack backed by over 7,220 patents, explore international partnerships and prepare for 6G through software upgrades rather than entirely new infrastructure.
According to the managing director of Jio Platforms Limited, the company is targeting an increase in its home broadband subscriber base from approximately 30 million to 100 million by leveraging its proprietary wireless technology to expand connectivity nationwide. Outlining Jio’s growth priorities, he highlighted home broadband, mobility, enterprise solutions and the monetisation of its technology stack as the company’s primary expansion opportunities.
He explained that traditional fibre rollout is often hindered by right-of-way clearances, permissions from housing societies and difficulties accessing buildings. To overcome last-mile connectivity barriers, Jio has developed a proprietary solution that operates across unlicensed 5G and Wi-Fi spectrum bands. The technology currently serves 6.5 million customers and accounts for 40 per cent of the company’s new customer additions.
According to him, Jio plans to leverage this platform to extend its presence across 19,000 PIN codes, with a particular focus on locations beyond tier I and tier II cities. Approximately 40 per cent of its net customer additions already originate from areas outside these urban centres. Jio is also working on more advanced versions of the technology, with its latest generation expected to deliver download speeds of up to 5 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
He also pointed to significant potential in enterprise connectivity, stating that Jio currently serves 65 per cent of bank branches across India. The company plans to broaden its offerings beyond connectivity by providing additional digital solutions to businesses, including secure broadband services and video surveillance.
In terms of technology development, Jio has created an integrated, end-to-end stack covering autonomous mobile networks, home platforms, devices, operating systems and digital applications. He noted that the company had filed over 7,220 patents and was exploring partnerships with international players to offer its technology stack through a managed-service model.
Jio is also preparing for the transition to 6G. He stated that the company aims to adopt an approach based on software upgrades rather than depending on the construction of an entirely new infrastructure network.
