Akash Ambani Highlights the Importance of Customer Value in Jio’s Expansion

Summary:
Reliance Jio plans to accelerate growth by expanding its affordable digital services, with Akash Ambani highlighting AI-powered voice features, home broadband, television and digital applications as key opportunities. The company aims to increase its home customer base from 30 million to 100 million, expand wireless connectivity beyond major cities and leverage its in-house technology and partnerships, including Google Gemini, to deliver greater customer value.

Reliance Jio plans to drive its next stage of expansion by offering services that deliver greater benefits to customers. At Jio’s IPO media briefing, Akash Ambani said the company aims to enhance users’ daily lives by providing affordable, high-quality digital solutions.

Although connectivity remains the core of Jio’s operations, Ambani explained how AI-based voice features, home broadband, television and digital applications could help the company better meet consumer needs. His comments provided insight into Jio’s strategy to build on its network infrastructure by introducing services that address customers’ everyday requirements.

Ambani identified customers as the central focus of Jio’s business, noting that improving their lives is a priority he considers daily. He said the company’s mission is to bring reliable digital services at affordable prices to every Indian household, citizen and business.

Jio now sees an opportunity to introduce practical products through the connectivity platform it has already established. Ambani said the company intends to offer services that make everyday activities easier, including tools that assist users during phone calls, as well as entertainment and applications for home use.

Jio Aims to Bring AI Benefits to Everyday Phone Calls

AI-powered voice services were among the consumer-focused applications highlighted by Ambani. He discussed features including call summaries, transcription and action lists in 12 Indian languages. These tools could enable users to revisit conversations and identify tasks or commitments mentioned during calls.

According to Ambani, Jio’s network infrastructure and technological capabilities position it to make these services available to a broad audience. He also discussed the possibility of providing the features to users without additional charges, although he did not announce a launch date, specific eligibility requirements or commercial availability details.

Ambani drew a comparison between expanding access to AI and Jio’s earlier initiative to make mobile data more widely available. He presented these features as part of the company’s wider strategy to introduce more digital services for its customers.

Strategic collaborations are another element of this strategy. Referring to Google’s Gemini, Ambani said the partnership had helped the AI service gain 30 million subscribers. He noted that the collaboration had achieved more than simply distributing the service, helping establish a new market.

He cited this partnership as an example of how Jio can combine its extensive reach and understanding of consumer needs to introduce digital services to more people while supporting technology partners in expanding their user base.

Connected Homes Seen as a Key Driver of Jio’s Expansion

Home broadband featured prominently in Ambani’s presentation. He identified the home segment as Jio’s largest growth opportunity over the next several years and outlined a target of increasing its home customer base from 30 million to 100 million. However, he did not specify a timeline for achieving this goal.

Jio’s strategy goes beyond providing internet access. Ambani discussed an integrated offering that brings together broadband, television and digital applications, with the objective of creating a more connected and comprehensive experience for households.

He also explained the reasons behind Jio’s development of proprietary wireless technology, known as UBR, for last-mile connectivity. Fibre deployment can be complicated by right-of-way clearances, housing society approvals and permissions to access buildings, making it difficult to extend connections to additional homes.

Ambani said the company developed its wireless technology to expand its reach beyond areas covered by its fibre network. He added that 40% of new home connections are coming from locations outside Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, demonstrating demand in markets beyond major urban centres.

Indigenous Technology Strengthens Jio’s Customer-Focused Approach

Ambani said Jio’s investment in developing its own technology is closely connected to its focus on customers. The company’s technological capabilities cover network infrastructure, home platforms, devices, operating systems and digital applications. Developing these components internally allows Jio to manage the overall user experience and introduce services through its own platform. Ambani highlighted the company’s workforce of more than 12,000 engineers and over 7,220 patent filings as indicators of its technology development efforts.

He stressed that Jio has built, deployed and managed its own technology, creating a foundation for introducing additional services. Throughout his remarks, Ambani connected customer value with business expansion, pointing to opportunities across mobile connectivity, connected homes, enterprise solutions and technology monetisation.

For consumers, the strategy outlined by Ambani suggests an expanded portfolio of connectivity, entertainment and AI-enabled offerings. He said Jio would maintain its emphasis on quality, affordability and practical solutions as it continues growing its digital services business.
