Elon Musk Proposes Starlink for Rural India, Highlighting Its Potential to Connect Underserved Communities

Meanwhile, Starlink confirmed that it remains in active discussions with the Indian government regarding its commercial launch in India, rejecting reports that the approval process had been frozen. 

Elon Musk has promoted Starlink’s satellite internet service as a potential solution for improving connectivity in India’s underserved communities, particularly in rural regions.

On Friday, Musk shared a post on X by Doge Designer highlighting that more than 11,000 listed Indian villages lacked 4G access as of May. Musk commented that Starlink could help connect communities that remain the least served, especially those in rural areas. The post cited 1.093 billion internet subscriptions in India as of March 2026, including 440.87 million rural subscriptions. Rural internet density stood at 48.31 subscriptions per 100 people, compared with 126.80 in urban areas.

The post also highlighted BharatNet’s progress, noting that more than 850,000 route-km of fibre had been deployed and around 221,000 Gram Panchayats made service-ready. However, Points of Presence were operational in only 80,472 Gram Panchayats as of June 2026. It suggested that Starlink could help overcome connectivity challenges caused by difficult terrain, limited commercial viability and infrastructure constraints by serving remote villages, mountainous areas, islands and disaster-affected regions. Direct-to-device connectivity could also help maintain mobile access beyond traditional tower coverage. The post called for the remaining regulatory clearances, spectrum allocation and approval for Starlink’s commercial launch in India.

Separately, Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer confirmed that the company remains engaged in discussions with the Indian government regarding the launch of its commercial satellite broadband services. Her comments followed reports claiming that India had paused the approval process over geopolitical and security concerns, including issues reportedly associated with Starlink terminals during the Iran conflict. Dreyer rejected those reports, saying Starlink continues to have active and productive discussions with the Indian government and that claims based on anonymous sources were misleading.
