India’s overall telephone subscriber base increased by 6.20 million in July 2026 to reach 1.35 billion, marking monthly growth of 0.46%, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday. Growth was recorded across both wireless and wireline segments.
Wireless connections rose by 0.46% to 1.31 billion, while wireline subscriptions grew 0.39% to 48.01 million. The country’s broadband subscriber base also expanded, increasing from 1.09 billion at the end of June to 1.094 billion in July, representing monthly growth of 0.64%. Mobile wireless access remained the largest segment, growing 0.59% to 1.03 billion.
Fixed wireless access (FWA) recorded stronger growth of 2.60%, reaching 18.84 million subscriptions, while fixed wired broadband connections increased 0.90% to 48.14 million. The broadband market continued to be dominated by a small number of providers, with the top five operators accounting for 98.59% of all broadband subscriptions. Reliance Jio remained the largest provider with 535.12 million users, followed by Bharti Airtel with 384.23 million and Vodafone Idea with 129.96 million.
BSNL and Atria Convergence Technologies occupied the fourth and fifth positions with 27.28 million and 2.47 million subscribers, respectively. Mobile connectivity also recorded gains, with wireless mobile subscriptions rising by 5.54 million to 1.29 billion. Wireless tele-density increased to 90.04% from 89.71% in June. Urban mobile subscriptions grew by 0.57%, while rural connections increased by 0.24%.
5G-based FWA services continued to expand during the month. The number of 5G FWA subscribers climbed from 12.94 million in June to 13.21 million in July, adding 272,820 connections. Rural users represented 50.31% of the 5G FWA subscriber base, marginally higher than the 49.69% share in urban areas.
Mobile number portability also remained significant, with 15.98 million porting requests recorded in July. Uttar Pradesh (East) reported the highest number of requests at 2.29 million, followed by Uttar Pradesh (West) with 1.55 million.
The TRAI figures indicate continued growth in India’s digital connectivity ecosystem, with wireless and broadband services driving overall subscriber expansion and 5G FWA adoption increasing across both rural and urban markets.
