Sateliot Names India a Key Growth Market for Satellite IoT Services

Summary:
Spanish satellite IoT provider Sateliot has established an Indian subsidiary to expand into the country’s growing satellite IoT market, identifying India as a key strategic market. The company sees strong opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, transport, mining, and utilities, particularly in remote areas lacking terrestrial connectivity. In its recommendations to TRAI, Sateliot called for a dedicated regulatory framework for narrowband satellite IoT, advocating proportionate spectrum pricing, service-specific regulations, transparent spectrum access, and fair compliance rules to promote innovation, competition, and improved last-mile connectivity.

Spanish satellite communications company Sateliot has reportedly established an Indian subsidiary as part of its plans to expand into the country’s satellite Internet of Things (IoT) sector. Describing India as one of its key strategic markets, the company highlighted the nation’s rapidly growing IoT landscape and increasing need for satellite-based connectivity as major factors behind its expansion.

Sateliot said India’s fast-growing IoT ecosystem offers considerable opportunities for satellite connectivity across industries such as agriculture, transportation, mining, and utilities, especially in remote regions where conventional terrestrial networks have limited or no coverage.

In its submission to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the company proposed a dedicated regulatory framework for narrowband satellite IoT services. Its recommendations include proportionate spectrum pricing, service-specific regulations, and a clear distinction between network infrastructure providers and service providers.

The company maintained that narrowband IoT applications consume relatively small amounts of spectrum and transmit limited data volumes, making their requirements fundamentally different from those of broadband satellite constellations. It therefore argued that satellite communication services should be regulated according to their individual use cases rather than under a single, uniform regulatory framework.

Sateliot also urged policymakers to ensure transparent access to spectrum, adopt proportionate compliance requirements, and provide a level playing field for emerging operators. According to the company, such a balanced regulatory approach would encourage innovation, strengthen competition and improve last-mile connectivity across India.
