BSNL Adopts a Distinct Fixed Broadband Strategy Compared to Jio and Airtel

Summary:
BSNL has emerged as the top performer in India’s fixed broadband market in nPerf’s FY26 rankings, achieving an overall score of 89,174 nPoints and moving up from second place last year. The state-run operator outperformed Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in overall fixed-line performance, reflecting steady improvements over the past five years. Although BSNL remains the third-largest broadband provider by market share, the report highlights its strong competitiveness in the fixed broadband segment. In FTTH download speeds, Airtel led with 241.72 Mbps, followed by Jio at 225.18 Mbps and BSNL at 198.54 Mbps, while nPerf noted that expanding fibre infrastructure is driving better user experiences across the industry.

While BSNL is widely recognised for its efforts to expand 4G and 5G services, the government-owned telecom operator is also making notable progress in the fixed broadband segment. According to the latest FY26 fixed broadband performance rankings released by French network-testing company nPerf, BSNL surpassed both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in a key performance indicator, underscoring its competitive position in the fixed-line internet market and reflecting a distinct strategy in broadband services.

In its report, nPerf noted that BSNL secured the top position in India’s fixed-line performance rankings for 2025–26, achieving an overall score of 89,174 nPoints. The operator moved up from second place in the previous year, continuing a steady improvement trend that has been observed over the last five years.

By comparison, Reliance Jio recorded 73,957 nPoints, while Bharti Airtel achieved 74,975 nPoints. nPerf evaluates internet performance based on real-world user experience and network quality. Despite leading the ranking, BSNL remains the country’s third-largest fixed broadband provider by market share, behind Jio and Airtel.

Commenting on the findings, nPerf President Renaud Keradec said that India’s fixed broadband industry is progressing into a more mature phase, with fibre-based infrastructure contributing to consistent enhancements in user experience across service providers.

The report also highlighted download speed performance for fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services. Airtel delivered the highest average download speed at 241.72 Mbps, followed by Jio at 225.18 Mbps, while BSNL recorded an average speed of 198.54 Mbps.
