TRAI Figures Show BSNL Maintains a Significant Presence in India’s Broadband Sector

According to the latest telecom subscription statistics released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) continued to remain a major player in India’s broadband landscape at the end of May 2026. The state-owned operator reported a combined broadband subscriber base of 27.52 million across its wired and wireless services, retaining its position as the country’s fourth-largest broadband provider.

Reliance Jio remained the market leader with 529.61 million broadband subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel at 376.11 million and Vodafone Idea with 129.21 million users. BSNL occupied the fourth position with 27.52 million subscribers, ahead of Atria Convergence Technologies, which served 2.43 million customers.

Together, the five largest broadband operators accounted for 98.59 percent of the country’s broadband subscriber base by the end of May 2026.

TRAI also noted that India’s overall broadband subscriber count increased from 1,073.44 million in April 2026 to 1,080.15 million in May 2026, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.63 percent.

BSNL Retains Third Position in Fixed Wired Broadband

BSNL also continued to be one of India’s leading providers of fixed wired broadband services. TRAI data showed the company had 4.50 million fixed wired broadband subscribers at the end of May 2026, securing the third position nationally.

Reliance Jio topped the segment with 14.47 million subscribers, while Bharti Airtel followed with 10.98 million. BSNL ranked ahead of Atria Convergence Technologies, which reported 2.43 million users, and Kerala Vision Broadband with 1.51 million subscribers.

Collectively, these five companies represented 71.53 percent of the fixed wired broadband market. TRAI categorises this segment under technologies including DSL, FTTx, Ethernet/LAN, cable modem, and Internet Leased Lines (ILL).

India’s fixed wired broadband subscriber base grew from 46.84 million in April to 47.40 million in May 2026, registering monthly growth of 1.18 percent.

Fourth Largest Wireless Broadband Provider

Beyond its wired network, BSNL also maintained its position among the country’s leading wireless broadband operators. TRAI reported that the company had 23.02 million wireless broadband subscribers at the end of May 2026, placing it fourth after Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.

Reliance Jio led the wireless broadband category with 515.14 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel at 365.13 million, Vodafone Idea with 129.21 million, and BSNL with 23.02 million users. The wireless broadband category includes both mobile broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services.

India’s Broadband Market Continues to Expand

TRAI’s latest figures indicate that India’s broadband sector continued its upward trajectory during May 2026. The country’s total broadband subscriber base reached 1,080.15 million, including 47.40 million fixed wired subscribers, 17.97 million fixed wireless access users, and 1,014.79 million mobile wireless broadband subscribers.

Overall, the latest TRAI data confirms that BSNL sustained its role as India’s fourth-largest broadband provider and remained the third-largest operator in the fixed wired broadband segment, preserving a strong presence alongside the country’s major private telecom companies.
