Summary:
Tamil Nadu has initiated the final phase of its rural broadband rollout by inviting bids to procure 2.5 lakh Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) under the BharatNet Phase II project. The ONTs will enable high-speed internet connectivity for homes, schools, hospitals, government offices, and other public institutions by activating the state’s existing fibre-optic network. The initiative is expected to bridge the rural-urban digital divide, improve access to digital services such as education, healthcare, and e-governance, and support economic growth by strengthening digital infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 regions.
Tamil Nadu has taken another major step towards activating its rural broadband infrastructure by issuing a tender for the procurement of 2.5 lakh Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). The initiative is expected to facilitate the delivery of high-speed internet services to households, government establishments, educational institutions, and other public facilities across the state.
The tender has been released by the Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation (TANFINET), which serves as the state’s implementing agency for BharatNet Phase II, the Central government’s flagship programme for expanding broadband connectivity in rural areas.
Over the past several years, fibre-optic networks have been extended to thousands of villages under the project, linking village and block panchayats. However, large sections of this infrastructure have remained inactive due to the absence of last-mile equipment needed to provide internet connectivity directly to end users.
The proposed ONTs will address this final connectivity requirement by converting fibre signals into broadband connections at customer locations. Once deployed, the devices will provide dependable high-speed internet access to homes, schools, colleges, hospitals, government departments, and other public institutions.
As outlined in the tender, the successful bidder will be responsible for supplying the ONTs, assisting TANFINET and its authorised partners with installation, and providing maintenance support for four years. The agreement includes a one-year warranty followed by three years of comprehensive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operations.
The initiative is expected to strengthen digital connectivity in rural Tamil Nadu, enabling improved access to online education, telemedicine, digital financial services, government welfare schemes, and various e-governance platforms.
Officials noted that the project will play an important role in narrowing the digital gap between urban and rural regions by extending reliable broadband services to underserved communities.
Government officials also pointed out that strong digital infrastructure has become increasingly important for attracting investments from the information technology sector, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), business process outsourcing (BPO) companies, and other knowledge-driven industries.
Improving broadband availability in tier-2 and tier-3 cities is expected to boost their economic competitiveness while creating fresh opportunities for growth and employment.
With the ONT procurement process now underway, Tamil Nadu has entered the final stage of converting its extensive rural fibre network into an operational broadband ecosystem, ensuring that the infrastructure developed under BharatNet delivers meaningful internet connectivity to citizens, institutions, and government organisations throughout the state.
