Jio Expands Broadband Reach Using Non-Line-of-Sight Technology

The company’s market share rose to around 43 per cent, driven largely by the rapid expansion of Jio AirFiber, which contributed more than 75 per cent of industry-wide broadband additions. Jio also upgraded its network with non-line-of-sight hardware technology to improve deployment efficiency and expand coverage in previously challenging areas. Alongside infrastructure improvements, the company introduced enhanced LiveTV services, WiFi 6 routers, faster installations, and AI-based monitoring systems to improve customer experience and maintain service quality across both fiber and AirFiber networks. 

Reliance Industries Limited reported that Jio maintained strong momentum in India’s fixed broadband sector during FY26 by adding close to 10 million new subscribers, further consolidating its market leadership. By March 2026, the company’s fixed broadband user base had reached 27.1 million, giving it an estimated 43 per cent market share — an increase of nearly 10 percentage points compared to the previous year, according to Reliance Industries’ quarterly update released on April 24, 2026, covering the performance of Jio Platforms Limited.

Jio AirFiber Drives Subscriber Expansion

Jio AirFiber emerged as the company’s biggest growth contributor, with its subscriber count nearing 13 million. The platform was responsible for over 75 per cent of the industry’s total fixed broadband additions during the year, highlighting rising demand for wireless broadband services in both urban and semi-urban regions.

Shift to Non-Line-of-Sight Hardware Broadens Coverage

As part of a significant network enhancement, Jio migrated its fixed broadband operations to non-line-of-sight (NLOS) hardware technology. The company believes this transition will substantially increase its serviceable market while improving deployment efficiency across multiple regions. The move is expected to support faster and broader broadband expansion, especially in areas where conventional line-of-sight connectivity had previously restricted installations.

The company stated that the transition to NLOS infrastructure would help widen market reach and streamline deployment operations across geographies.

Enhanced Consumer Services and Connectivity Features

Jio also upgraded its customer offerings by introducing an improved LiveTV experience that includes access to over 1,000 channels, voice-enabled content discovery, and WiFi 6 routers. The upgraded routers are intended to deliver enhanced security and support for a larger number of connected devices, addressing increasing household demand for uninterrupted digital connectivity.

Strategy Team Highlights Operational Scale

During the Q4 FY2025-26 earnings call held on April 24, 2026, Anshuman Thakur said the home broadband segment remains a key focus area for the company. He noted that Jio added nearly 10 million subscribers over the previous 12 months, with approximately 75 per cent of those additions coming through AirFiber, which he described as performing successfully at scale.

Thakur further explained that the rollout of non-line-of-sight deployments had progressed from pilot stages into large-scale field implementation. He acknowledged that certain operational challenges emerged during deployment, but the company had addressed those issues. According to him, the upgraded technology now allows Jio to serve areas where line-of-sight limitations previously restricted expansion, enabling the company to connect more locations and customer premises while increasing subscriber acquisition capacity.

Focus on Service Quality and Installation Efficiency

Discussing operational improvements, Thakur said Jio had introduced multiple initiatives related to service quality and customer assurance. One of the key measures included rapid onboarding of technical staff to support the company’s growing installation scale, especially during periods when daily additions ranged between 25,000 and 60,000 new home connections.

He added that more than 90 per cent of installations are now completed within 24 hours, with the company aiming to move closer to full same-day or next-day installation coverage. According to Thakur, technician availability remains the primary operational constraint rather than network readiness or infrastructure capability.

He also highlighted the use of AI-based KPI monitoring systems that enable real-time tracking and faster corrective action, adding that the company has maintained nearly zero service-quality complaints across both fiber and AirFiber services.
